About Me

After 44 years of studying, reading and exploring the Tarot, I finally feel as if I have something to contribute to a wider understanding of this system of symbols that has been so influential in my life. My grandmother introduced me to the Tarot when I was just a child, and I bought my very first Tarot deck when I was just 10 years old. By the time I finished high school, I was funding my coffee habit by reading cards at coffee houses for friends and strangers alike.

Back then, the Tarot was an obscure, arcane system, known mostly to mystics and hippies. Over the years, the cards have become more widely accepted and mainstreamed, and my understanding of it has both broadened and deepened. In the process of designing my own deck and writing a book on the Tarot, I found that I've developed my own views and beliefs about this ancient system of symbolism and archetypes.

The more I did readings for friends and strangers, the more I recognized an odd pattern. While the recipients of those readings were nearly always amazed at the insight and information provided by the cards, I often felt that I'd spit out a jumbled up mass of unrelated gobbledygook. My friends would exclaim, "I can't believe you know THAT!" and I'd respond, "Know what?" Eventually, I came to an obvious conclusion: the secret of the Tarot is not in the psychic abilities of the reader, though I have no doubt that some psychics can use them as a focus for an intuitive reading. Nor is it in the cards themselves, though some decks seem to be more attuned to certain types of questions than others. The secret is locked in the mind of the person seeking answers, and the cards provide an alternative way of getting around the barriers the mind has built around them.

Once I realized that, I began to use the cards differently. Rather than looking for answers, I now use the Tarot to ask questions. When I draw a card from the deck, I ask myself, "How is this card relevant to my life or this situation? What can I learn by applying this card to my problem?" The answers to those questions often force me to look at a problem from another direction or to admit a reality I'd been avoiding

While I still occasionally read for friends, family and even strangers who are moved to ask me to draw a few cards, these days my readings focus on empowerment, for which I've found the Tarot is an incredibly useful tool. I hope you'll find these introspective daily readings useful in your own daily journey.
