By the Numbers

One of the beauties of the Tarot is that the interpretations are remarkably consistent once you understand a few basic things about the Minor Arcana.

  1. Every pip card in the minor arcana is associated with a number and a suit.
  2. Each of the four suits represents specific attributes, elements and areas of life.
  3. Each of the 10 numbers has a basic meaning.
By combining the suit with the number, you can easily put together the interpretations of the pip cards, even if you don't memorize the precise meanings, or have the pictures to go help you. This cheat sheet can help.

Aces represent beginnings. They are the seeds from which everything grows.

Twos represent connections and partnerships.

Threes represent consolidation.

Fours are a resting period, a place to regroup before continuing on.

Fives are contentious numbers. They often turn the energies of their suit on its head.
